In 1822-1823, Lin Chi-neng built a beautiful home in Taipei. He named the 1.---- Lin An Tai, taking An from Anxi, his fathers hometown, and Tai from his companys name. The Belle Tout Lighthouse is one of the most famous such structures in all of England. It is 1.---- on top of the beautiful chalk cliffs of Beachy Head in East Sussex County. When the 2.---- fourteen-meter stone lighthouse was completed in 1834, it was in just the right spot. 3.----, over time, parts of the cliff in front of the lighthouse had fallen into the sea. By 1999, the lighthouse was just four meters away from the edge of the cliff.

  (A) But the purpose of this wooden building was for leisure, not manufacturing.
  (B) However, once in a while, a structure is so special that the people fight to preserve it.
  (C) These buildings stories show us that it is possible to strike a balance between the old and the new.
  (D) After it sat empty for ten years, local artists and theater groups began using it as a performance space.
  (E) Despite the governments efforts, the original buildings are now mostly used as office spaces.
In Taipei, rapid development often comes with an out with the old, in with the new way of thinking. Historic buildings and other important relics* of the past are torn down for the sake of progress. 1.----

This was the case with Taihoku Winery. This sake* factory was built during the Japanese colonial* rule of Taiwan. After the Japanese left, the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau* took over the factory and used it to manufacture similar drinks. In 1987, the factory was closed down because it caused too much pollution in the city center. 2.---- At first the police tried to stop them, but in 2005 the government transformed the factory into Huashan 1914 Creative Park. Today the park hosts all kinds of cultural and artistic events and is one of the coolest places to hang out in Taipei.
Beitou Bathhouse has a similar story. Just like Taihoku Winery, the bathhouse was built by the Japanese when they ruled Taiwan. 3.---- People went there to soak* in pools of mineral-rich hot spring water. Beitou Bathhouses fate after the Japanese departed was different from that of Taihoku Winery. Instead of maintaining the buildings function, locals used it in various ways: first as an office of the KMT, then a reception house, then a police station. Finally, just like Taihoku Winery, the bathhouse was abandoned. In 1994, a group of students and teachers from Beitou Elementary School urged the government to save the building. Four years later, it was reopened as the Beitou Hot Spring Museum.
4.---- Huashan is now vital to the local arts community, and the Beitou Hot Spring Museum teaches visitors about the unique history of Beitou. Both play a key role in making Taipei the special place it is today.

From 1960 to 1970, a dam was built across the longest river in the world, the Nile. The dam would create huge amounts of electricity for Egypt. However, the reservoir* created by the dam, Lake Nasser, would flood several historic sites. One of these was the Temple of Dendur.
The Temple of Dendur is an ancient Egyptian structure dating to 15 BC. Dedicated to the gods Isis and Osiris, it is a classic example of architecture from that period. Of course, no one wanted to see the temple lost forever. Thats why in 1960, UNESCO stepped in to help save the important structure. America also provided a lot of assistance. To show gratitude for the help, Egypt decided to give the Temple of Dendur to America.
To move the temple, it was first carefully taken apart. Next, they packed the 880 tons of stone into 661 huge crates* and transported them to America by ship. In the US, a competition was held to decide which institution* would get to display the temple. In the end, this honor went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it was rebuilt and is still displayed today.

Progress and preservation: which is more important?
Kelly: In my opinion, preservation is more important. Historic buildings reflect the past and add character to their surroundings. Demolishing them erases valuable parts of our heritage. While new development has its benefits, we can often adapt and reuse old structures instead of tearing them down.
Frank: It shouldnt be a matter of choosing one over the other but rather finding a balance between both. Embracing progress allows us to modernize and improve living conditions, while preserving historic buildings helps maintain our cultural heritage. By balancing the two, we can ensure that new development coexists with the rich history of older structures.
